AP Athletes of the Year

The Associated Press named its athletes of the year for both male and female athletes.  And the winners are…

  • Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots

Brady is towards the end of an unbelievable season.  He is the true, and one of the last, superstar quarterbacks in football.  Brady is on pace to break Peyton Manning’s record for touchdown passes in a season.  His team is undefeated and looking to stay that way with two weeks left in the season and at most three post-season games.  Brady beat out Roger Federer (winner of five straight Wimbeldon’s and four straight US Open’s), Tiger Woods (winner of the first FedEx Cup and over $10 million on the season), Peyton Manning (Super Bowl MVP), Barry Bonds (Vitamin B junkie) and Josh Beckett (Red Sox ace and World Series champion).

  • Lorena Ochoa, professional golfer, LPGA Tour

Ochoa made the 2007 LPGA season into one for the record books, drawing comparisons to Tiger Woods.  She took over the #1 spot in the Rolex Rankings from Annika Sorenstam.  She won her first major championship at the Women’s British Open, played at the famed St. Andrews golf course…the first female to win a professional event there.  And, with winning the season-ending ADT Championship, she became the first LPGA player to break the $4 million mark in a season.  Ochoa beat out Justine Henin (winner of three straight French Opens), Paula Radcliffe (NY Marathon winner), Candace Parker (Tennessee basketball player), and Allyson Felix (winner of three gold medals at the World Track and Field Championships).
