NHL: Rangers may play at Yankee Stadium

In what would cap off a busy final season at Yankee Season, the Rangers are in talks with the NHL and Yankee Stadium officials to host this years Winter Classic.  The details are still being discussed but looks like a real possibility.  The idea follows the success of the New Year’s Day game between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The NHL may push the Rangers to play another major market team rather than rivals NY Islanders or NJ Devils, to make the game a more national draw.  The only teams that would generate ratings would be Original Six teams the Detroit Red Wings or Boston Bruins.  Other positive draw would be the Colorado Avalanche, Philadelphia Flyers or the remaining Original Six franchises – Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs or Chicago Blackhawks.

  1. I like this idea! They should make the Winter Classic a yearly event. Kind of like how there are games on Thanksgiving for football, there should be a game on New Year’s Day every year.
That would be a step in the right direction for this league.

  2. It would be perfect…especially since college football abandoned the New Year’s Day tradition. It would totally pull in a casual fan that would be looking for something to watch.
