Major League Baseball’s players union head, Donald Fehr, is making the rounds at various spring training facilities and one thing on his mind is why no team has made any offers to Barry Bonds. Fehr says that the union analyzes the free agent market every year to make sure that players are being treated fairly.
The problem with Bonds is not the steroid allegations but the price tag. He made almost $20 million last season with a .276 batting average and 66 RBIs to go along with his record-setting 28 home runs. He may have played his way out of the National League as his mobility is limited. But, he would make a terrific designated hitter for an American League squad.
How about Bonds in pinstripes for the final season in Yankee Stadium? The New York fans would love Bonds as he brings the team another World Championship. What a fitting end to a remarkable career.

What about the possibility of losing him to jailtime? Wouldn’t that limit the offers somewhat?
Then, you write a clause in the contract. If you get a couple of months out of him or maybe a late summer return…either way it is worth the risk.
