The tournament has been captivating as many of the favorites are still alive but a few top teams have gone down. The Sweet 16 will be played on Thursday and Friday so re-energize (and hopefully your brackets are not total busts). Here is a breakdown by region.
East:
UNC v. Washington St; Louisville v. Tennessee
North Carolina rolled through Mt. Saint Mary’s and Arkansas. They are set to face the #4 seed Washington State. WSU easily beat Winthrop in the first round and then toppled Notre Dame by 20 points. Louisville has played well beating Boise State before dominating Oklahoma. The Cardinals are set to face Tennessee, who easily beat American before Butler made a game of it in the second round.
Midwest
Kansas v. Villanova; Wisconsin v. Davidson
Top-ranked Kansas has played well beating Portland State and UNLV pretty handily. They are set to face Villanova. The #12 seed upset Clemson in the first round before beating Sienna, who beat Vanderbilt by 21 points in the first round for one of the more lopsided upsets in tournament history. Wisconsin breezed passed Cal-State Fullerton in the first round and then Kansas State in the second. They face #10 Davidson, who beat power and tournament favorite Georgetown. Davidson also upset Gonzaga in the first round.
South
Memphis v. Michigan St.; Stanford v. Texas
Memphis had their way with Texas-Arlington before Mississippi State gave them a game. They will face Michigan State, who beat Temple in the first round and Pittsburgh in the second. Stanford squeaked by Marquette in an overtime classic tournament game. They also easily beat Cornell in the first round. Stanford will play Texas, who beat Austin Peay before Miami, who gave the Longhorns a great game.
West
UCLA v. W. Kentucky; Xavier v. W. Virginia
Top-seed UCLA destroyed MVSU but only beat Texas A&M by two-points in the second round. They will face Cinderella Western Kentucky, who downed #5 Drake in the opening round before beating San Diego in the second round. Xavier got past the Georgia Bulldogs before beating Purdue in the second round. They face off against West Virginia, who beat Arizona before upsetting the Duke Blue Devils.
