Colin Montgomerie is upset that the Masters didn’t pick him…but he would be just as upset if he was playing.
Claiming that the tournament is choosing players based on “TV rights,” Montgomerie was peeved that as the 75th ranked golfer in the world he was not chosen for one of the few open invitations to the tournament. Chosen over him were three Asian players…Jeev Milkha Singh (India, 80th), Prayad Marksaeng (Thailand, 93rd) and Liang Wenchong (China, 111th).
Montgomerie has played in all but two Masters since 1992. He missed the 2005 tournament when Shingo Katayama (Japan, 67th) was chosen over Montie, who was ranked 51st.
The Masters automatically invites the top 50 golfers in the world, plus winners of top-tier PGA events and top finishers at major tournaments.
Montie claims he would have spoken up had he qualified for the tournament. But, every year, the Masters chooses players that would bring a good story to the week. Jeev Milkha Singh played last year and was not in the top 50…where was Montie speaking up for those that were passed over? Quiet on the tee.
Thumbs up to the Masters for choosing a field that is different and interesting. Fans need something to keep them entertained as Tiger Woods dominates the field.

You can’t keep Monty down for long – he’ll be back!
The Masters rewards good play and Monty is simply not playing well right now.
