Chien-Ming Wang pitched a two-hit complete game against the Boston Red Sox in the series opener. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and gave up a home run to J. D. Drew in the fifth that tied the game. Jason Giambi gave the Yankees the lead with a leadoff home run in the seventh inning.
The Sox set an attendance record with 37,624 fans at Fenway Park, which underwent an expansion over the winter.
The weekend series in Boston has Mike Mussina going against Josh Beckett on Saturday with Phil Hughes v. Daisuke Matsuzaka on Sunday.
